I-CAMP•14 is being held in Stellenbosch, near Cape Town, South Africa.
If you have registered for the School and not indicated that you are staying in your own arranged accommodation you will be staying at the Dagbreek Koshuis, corner Victoria and Bosman Streets, Stellenbosch, 7600 (see, building 104). There will be security staff 24 hours a day at the dormitory with your details and to bring you to your rooms when you arrive. Check in is after 14:00 on 14 June 2014 with check-out by 10:00 on 29 June 2014. Earlier check in for persons arriving on Saturday morning is being arranged. If you are arriving on Saturday 14 June, a Stellenbosch physics graduate will show you around the campus and central Stellenbosch (weather permitting), leaving at 12:00 and at 15:00 from Dagbreek.
Should you have indicated your arriving flight number to the local organisers, the Airport Shuttle will take you to the dormitory or to other local accommodation as appropriate. The shuttle company, Bettina Shuttle, will display the board “I-CAMP•2014 Stellenbosch” to meet you at either the international or domestic arrivals halls in Cape Town International Airport. Should no-one be there please wait, as they will be collecting persons from several flights at a time. Please ensure that Bettina Shuttle is doing the transfer, they should have a complete list of attendees who requested transfers with them. Cash payment for the shuttle will be collected on Monday, 16 June 2014. (As mentioned before, taking the shuttle will probably be the least expensive and safest option for travel between the airport and Stellenbosch. We strongly recommend making use of it.)
The school itself will take place within easy walking distance of the accommodation. It will be held in the Merensky Building for Physics (“Merensky-gebou vir Fisika”, building 66). The lecture hall (Lecture Hall Delta) is reached by entering the building at the main entrance and turning left, then walking down to the end of the passage. We shall post a notice bearing the name “I-CAMP•2014 Stellenbosch” adjacent to main entrance.
The I-CAMP programme commences on Sunday, June 15, at 13:00 with registration in the Physics Department, someone will direct you at the front entrance. During registration you will be handed with a clicker that should be returned at the end of the School. Stellenbosch physics graduates will meet attendees at the dormitory at 12:30, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00 to show you to the Physics Department.
Some introductory words and hints for orientation, etc., at 15:30 will be followed by a Panel Discussion at 16:00. All lectures take place in Lecture Hall Delta. Please join us for welcoming drinks and snacks at 17:00 in the Physics Department. You will not get lost finding this in one of the teaching labs upstairs.
Internet will be available in the lecture hall. Should your home institution be a member of Eduroam you will be able to log onto University Wifi at various other locations in the Physics Department and on campus too.
The lectures commence on Monday morning, 16 June 2014, in lecture Hall Delta. In an exciting development the school will move to the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg (45 km away) on 26 and 27 June. On those days buses to Muizenberg leave from the Physics Department at 08:00 on each day and will return from Muizenberg at 18:00. Other highlights are the poster sessions as indicated in the programme.
Please note:
- Many shops are closed on Sunday and public holiday afternoons, Monday 16 June is a South African public holiday.
- South Africa power supply uses 220 V at 50 Hz. You might need to purchase an adapter in town or at the airport as South African electrical sockets (power outlets) are completely differently shaped to anything you might have encountered elsewhere. We shall not supply adapters.
- Be careful when crossing roads: South Africans drive on the left.
- Bring warm clothes, umbrella and towels (if staying in the dormitory).
